Races Around the Globe

Whether you know about types of car, engines, or wheels, or can tell a greaseless bearing from a well-oiled chain, or not, it still doesn’t mean you can’t enjoy the many exciting, exhilarating car races which take place each year around the world.

We’ve all heard of the Grand Prix, but what about one of these races to get your heart doing likewise? Thrill seeking doesn’t come any better than at these, for spectators and petrolheads alike. Travellers are encouraged to make a trip to see any, or all, of the following:

Bathurst 1000 With limited roadways and, as a result, very tight, close driving, this V8 Supercars race is billed as Australia’s ‘Great Race’ and is the motor racing highlight of the year.

Belgian Grand Prix Set in dense forest, this Belgian biggie features the ‘Eau Rouge’, which is considered by many to be the most high octane corner of all races, as it demands it be traversed at incredible high speeds.

Indy 500 Held annually at Indianapolis Motor Speedway, this race features the highest average speeds in the world - up to an amazing 220 mph. This one is often called ‘the greatest spectacle in racing’.

Le Mans Known as the grand prix of endurance, Le Mans demands that drivers compete and finish within 24 hours. This means that the race takes place both by day and by night, over a total of 8.469 fume-filled miles.

Daytona 500 (NASCAR) Another race, another billing! This one is often known as ‘the great American race’. It draws the largest audience of any race in the USA and is the first race of the season.

Rally Finland Getting over the Finnish finish line is very exciting in this north European race! Modified road cars jump and leap through the air and the spectacle of this draws thousands of visitors every year.

The Dakar Rally An off-road race, competitors in this one can be driving a car, truck, or motorcycle. The main point is not the vehicle, but how well it can maneuver in this difficult terrain. This race takes place in South America, but was formerly a route between Paris and Dakar.
